Cairns was founded in 1876 hastened by the need to export gold that was found nearby. Later it also exported agriculture --- sugar cane, corn, rice, bananas, pineapples etc. The success of local agriculture helped Cairns to establish itself as a port and the creation of a harbour board in 1906 helped to assure its economic future. During World War ll, Cairns was used by the Allied Forces as a staging base or operations. After the was Cairns slowly reinvented itself as a centre for tourism. One of the biggest attractions is of course The Great Barrier Reef. Our only time spent in the city was a quick walk from our ship to the catamaran that was going to take us out to the reef.
The Great Barrier Reef stretches for more than 2,000 Km or 1,242 miles along the northeast coast of Queensland. It is the only living organic thing than can be seen from Earth’s orbit and is one of the wonder’s of the natural world as the world’s largest coral reef ecosystem. It consists of more than 3,000 reefs which range in size from 1 hectare to over 10,000 hectares. and abounds with wildlife. The coral has, over the years brought many ships to an end - the most famous of these the HMS Pandora. Our day on the reef was a bit overcast but snorkeling was still done & the colours of the fish and  coral were fantastic. Unfortunately I did not have an underwater camera but have added a few extras off the net.I did get one picture taken by the underwater photographer of me with Wally the Wrasse.
