Flag of Australia  , Victoria,
Wednesday, April 4, 2012

The final two days of our journey flew by as we headed through South Australia and Victoria towards home.

After leaving Minnipa we followed the Eyre Highway through Port Augusta, Snowtown (yes THAT Snowtown), Adelaide (where we started to remember what it was like to sit in traffic), then finally Murray Bridge and Tailem Bend. Not wanting to stay near the noisy highway we decided to spend our last night at Wellington, a little town near where the Mighty Murray runs into Lake Alexandrina, which is accessed by a short ferry ride across the river. After a long day on the road it was a relief to set up camp in the quiet caravan park and even better to learn that the local pub served excellent meals, so that's where we headed. We are pleased to report that the pub's good reputation was indeed deserved.

But there's no rest for the wicked so it was up and on the road early this morning with the aim of reaching Melbourne by about 4pm.  Our ETA quickly changed when we encountered a series of road projects that slowed our progress. Reaching Kaniva by late morning we took a break, sitting in the pleasant garden of a local cafe just near the iconic Big Windmill and the amusing painted sheep. Then back on the road, listening to an audio book (and more puzzles for me) to while away the time.

By the time we reached the outskirts of Melbourne, Ivars was looking the worse for wear after four steady days of driving but he soldiered on without complaint. He really is a very excellent driver! Unfortunately we arrived right on the build up of peak hour so it was a slow, frustrating crawl across town. But we finally made it home - only an hour later than planned.

Since then we've pretty much unpacked as well as enjoying a visit from Lija, Brent and Lily and sharing pizza together. Ivars is now asleep in his chair in front of the TV !

We've had a great trip and seen some beautiful places, many of which we would love to visit again. We hope you've enjoyed following our progress, thanks for being part of it and for your comments along the way.

So farewell, until we start our next adventure.

Regards

Robyn and Ivars
