Christmas eve was definetly an adventure! Hoping to go to a beach today he hopped on a water taxi to island basimentos. Once on the island you must take a 20 minute hike up the hill to the other side of the island. If it were only that simple! It rained quite a bit earlier in the day. The hike turned into a 60 minute hike through a sloppy muddy trail. Shoes were not possible so they were quickly removed. Sometimes the mud puddles were as deep as our knees! I lost my sunglasses. Danielle fell a few times and was covered in mud, pants ripped, and a pretty deep cut at the bottom of her foot. I was hoping that by the time we got to the beach we would find an alternate route back - which was not the case. We founnd a slightly easier path but it was still muddy. All that trouble for a quick beach visit!
The large group at the hostal made a huge Christmas dinner but since it was mostlyfish danielle and I went for dinner at ultimo refugio and it was great! We joined the group for some late night entertainment which included a group funded firework purchase. For $21 we got a nice little display. After we set ours off other people soon followed. Fireworks were coming from all directions. It was amazing until it started downpouring. We made our way to the bar - like many other places, ladies night draws in the crowd. The night was filled with drinking and dancing all night. Four of our original 12 of us made it to the last bar. We were the only gringos in the whole place and mad it back home around 5. Good times for sure- a very active Christmas eve.
Overall Bocas is a fun beach town with a lot of surfers, rastafarians, and tourists. The beaches are not a quick walk from town, as many you need to catch a long bus or take a boat to... and once you are there there is usually a little hike as well!
