Two weeks ago, the world knew very little about Jo Wilfried Tsonga! Tonight we know he's a finalist in the Australian Open! From obscurity to the final of a Grand Slam! Wow! The Frenchman Tsonga literally destroyed the World's #2 Rafael Nadal of Spain! No easy feat but Tsonga made it look easy winning three straight sets! His fastest serve was 221 km/hr and had 17 aces! Although it isn't faster than a F1 car, it's still pretty impressive! The crowd loved him as he spontaneously showed his emotions!
Earlier in the day, we encountered Tsonga during a practice in an outside court. He appeared loose, almost oblivious to the stardom that was happening to him!
Other matches occurring this afternoon was doubles, mixed doubles and quadriplegic singles. Most of these matches during the Aus Open were played in the numerous outdoor courts.
The first matches up in Rod Laver Arena were a couple of women's semifinals! Last years finalist Maria Sharapova was scheduled to play Jelena Jankovic while Daniela Hantuchova and Ana Ivanovic were playing in the other! All four women represented a European dominance at this years Aus Open! Ironically, it's the same situation on the mens side!
The globally recognized Sharapova came out flying and eager to get to the final! Her serves were fast and rallies sharp and only needed two sets to defeat Jankovic! The other match between Hantuchova and Ivanovic provided more emotion and drama! Hantuchova came out strong winning the first set and was leading in the second when Ivanovic woke up! Ivanovic turned it around and came back to win the second set. The final set was a thriller and came down to the last game before crowd favorite Ivanovic pulled it out! It was an exciting match to set up a Women's Final between Maria Sharapova of Russia and Ana Ivanovic of Serbia!
