Dear, oh dear, oh dear, woke up to another rainy day. So rain gear on and umbrellas in hand , Rick and I walked to the bus stop and caught the bus into the city. We wanted to get to the castle early to avoid most of the crowd and not have to queue up for long to purchase our tickets. As it turned out we did not have to wait at all because we are members of English Heritage, which gives you free entry to the castle and no waiting. Nice start. The first guided tour started at 9.45am and seeing it was almost that , we took the tour. Very informative and gives you a good indication of what it is all about. After the tour you can just walk around at your own pace and look at all the items that have been pointed out to you. Really raining heavy by now, so we spend a fair amount of time inside the various museums in order to keep dry. Also visited the vault which contains the Scottish Crown Jewels. At the end ,all that remained to visit was the outside bits, not an easy feat as by now we were getting wet ourselves and started to dodge more umbrellas. At one stage, while we were walking in the rain taking in all the scenery, we just stopped and looked at each other and burst out laughing. the whole situation was mad, " no way would we do this at home " we said to each other. So there we stood, wet and shivering, but we completed our visit to the castle. Actually, although it was a good visit, somehow I expected a little more or for it to be more impressive to look at. Not as big as we expected it to be. Of course the original castle was completely destroyed and only the dungeon and St Margaret's Chapel remain of the original structure. Probably the weather did not help either.
Left the castle grounds and once again we walked along the Royal Mile. We walked the mile yesterday when it was dry and it was a great place to be. Today it was still busy but no street entertainment  or buskers, due to the wet weather. Our original plan was to visit the castle, walk around the city and enjoy the parks and gardens, at the same time take in the street entertainment and stop and enjoy a nice lunch before going home. What happened was that after walking the Royal Mile, Rick said " where shall we go next" and my immediate reply was " Home " His reply was of total relief. So we hopped on the bus, made some lunch and a cuppa at home . Still raining of course. Some of the photos of Edinburgh were taken yesterday, could not take many today just too misty and wet.
Despite the elements we have enjoyed our visit to Edinburgh, especially this time of the year with all the festival entertainment to enjoy. Well done Edinburgh, as far as a city is concerned, you are ok.
On the road again tomorrow heading south.
