Knock Caravan and Camping Park

Yes we are now in Knock. No particular reason , it is half way to our next destination and seemed like a good place to park for the night. Once again lots of nice country side which made it a pleasure to look at. Good roads and mostly empty, helped as well. Arrived at  the township of Knock just after 1pm and started looking for our caravan park. We drove through the township , seemed very busy to us, but said " oh well it is Sunday after all and people are coming out of church" We did see a sign just prior to the town with Knock Shrine on it but we did not know what it was all about. Carried on and found the park, ate some lunch and went for a walk to town. We have since learned what it was all about , which is, and I quote from the brochure, "  The story of Knock begins on the evening of 21st of August 1879, when on that day,  appeared at the south gable of the church at Knock, County Mayo, Ireland, Our Lady Mary, and St Joseph, St John the Evangelist. Beside them and a little to the left was an altar with a cross and the figure of a lamb, around which angels hovered. Ther were 15 witnesses to the apparition, young and old, who watched and prayed for two hours in the pouring rain. In 1879 and again in 1939 church commissions rigirously investigated the evidence of the witnesses and in each case found them to be trustworthy and satisfactory. The Shrine now has the same status as Lourdes or Fatima."  unquote.
Believers enter the shrine, which is enormous and takes up 85 acres, fill their bottles with holy water, touch a particular stone and kneel and pray in front of all sorts of holy statues. It was stated to us that lots of believers have been cured at the Shrine. I leave those statements for you to decide.  Of course the whole thing smells like a money making machine, we were even asked to donate money to the church so that they could save Ireland from bankruptcy . All in all it was something very new for us, good to have a look at . Rick touched the healing stone just in case, but soon after his knee started to hurt. It did not work he said, but I explained to him that you have to go the whole hog and visit every little part of the complex and donate, otherwise it will not happen. All the same it was very comforting for those who believe in it.
A nice day today, different but very enjoyable. On the move again tomorrow.
