Yesterday we drove from Santa Elena to our present campsite here in Beas de Granada. I must say it was the most beautiful drive down to here. We took the main road but that did not spoil the views. The distance between these two spots is approx 160km, as far as the eye can see we saw olive trees. In the front, back and side of you , all olive trees. As it is very hilly and rocky country it amazed us as how these trees were planted, grown and harvested on these steep terrains. This area produces 10% of the worlds olive oil and we believe every word of this after our trip yesterday. It was a delight to see it all. Our caravan park is a small park located about 20km from the city of Granada. A lovely park with the best views to the mountains and down to the village. Rick will take some photos of it all tomorrow and we will put them on the blog. the mountains in the distance are 3000metres high and still have some snow on them. Here we were , 30degrees warm looking at the snow. Great stuff.
This morning we caught the bus to Granada, just over a 40 minute trip. Maps in hand once again we found our way around most of it. Granada's eight centuries as a Muslim capital ( 711-1492 ) are symbolised everywhere. Islam was never completely expunged here and today seems more present than ever. It has a growing North African community, mainly in and around the Albaicin area. This is an area with a maze of cobbled streets, ally ways and lane ways with it's peculiar architecture all of its own. We walked around this area a fair bit today and were stunned as how cars get around on these cobbled narrow little streets. Many times the rear vision mirrors are tucked in, otherwise you never get through them. Us pedestrians just have to squash ourselves against the wall and hope for the best. To get to the top of the Albaicin district we had to climb so many steps, just as you thought you'd get to the end a curve in the road would give you more to conquer. Got there after much effort and all was worth it. Great views of everything and of course the rest of the sightseeing was all down hill. A very interesting part of the city.
Sooon enough we came to the centre of Granada, lovely buildings to see. We visited the Cathedral, even though we said we would not go inside the Cathedral this time, we were tempted and so glad that we changed our minds. It is so spectacular and reeks of opulance. The Cathedral was conceived as an expression of victory of Christianity over Islam. It was seen as just, that Christianity should again take hold in this region where it had once been so firmly rooted. They did a splendid job and achieved their objectives. Very hard to describe the inside as it takes you breath away. Will just show you some images but cannot do it justice all the same.
Getting pretty tired by now but still had to wait an hour to catch the bus. Found a nice little cafe and ordered a beer and a glass of red. Once again all served with an appetiser big enough to call lunch. Glad to get home and put our feet up. We will relax over the weekend and just walk to the different villages around here. On monday it will be back to Granada to visit the Alhambra which is worth a visit on it's own.
Great couple of days for us and still sunny and warm.
