We had a barbie last night and I don't mean that we were playing with dolls. Frank bought a couple of T Bone steaks and some sausages as well. Of course the sausages were the German kind , a lovely salad to go with it and a bottle of red. Happy tummies at the end of the day. The weather is still holding so we could eat our dinner outside.
Nice breadrolls for breakfast. the bakeries here have so many different types of bread to choose from and all so nice. It is very hard for Rick and I to walk past the bakery and not buy anything. Trav you know what I am talking about I am sure.
Next mission Hamburg, what can I say except that it an beautiful city with lots of gardens and people areas. I will let the pictures tell the story. Our friends were very helpful and showed us so many things. The town hall is simply stunning and has been kep in very good condition, also a popular tourist spot so many people there although you don't seem to feel that there are a lot of people around. One unusual thing we saw was that if you park your car in the wrong place they come and take it away. Saw one picked up, put on a truck and taken away, of course it costs a hell of a lot of money to get it back from the police. there are plenty of car parks here but some people do not want to pay of course.
Hamburg has a monument relating to the bombing during the second world war which is a burned church. the interior has been burned but the exterior remains. It seems to dominate the skyline wherever you go and is almost a little eerie but a very idea to keep it like that. It brings home the futility of that war as there we were admiring it , a couple of Aussies in germany with german friends and that is only 65 years later.Makes you wonder.
The four of us decided to take a boat trip on the Elbe and see the Harbour. Hamburg is the largest inland Harbour in the world and is just magic to see. It only took an hour but was very informative and we saw so many things.
After discovering the old city we walked to the new city. this has been developed during the past 5 years or so and will probably grow bigger than the old part. It is an exciting contrast but still beautiful and will be very popular in the future. Their now still unfinished and very expensive opera house is also being build there although after spending 300 million euro on it and will not be completed for another couple of years it seems like a bottomless money pit. Saddest of all it does not look very great.
We realy enjoyed today and appreciated Hamburg very much. A great place to visit.
