Where I stayed
With friends in Pinneberg

Two days into one today. Yesterday we left Hameln, a funny set up there as you cannot leave until 9am. The reason being is that you have to pay for your power there and your cord is locked in so you cannot escape during the night, yeh as if, anyway the office does not open until 9am and of course everybody is waiting. finally the guy arrives and of course he has to walk around the park reading all these meters, more time, than work out the cost for everyone and finally you pay and are allowed to leave. Different but alas cannot say anything bad about it as the owner was so nice to us and could not make us feel more welcome. He did not realy have WiFi but we were able to use his as he felt it was important to keep in touch with everyone in OZ. Very nice of them.
Finally we were on our way, punched Pinneberg into Basil Garmin and followed the instructions. Everyone told us that the tunnel road under the Elba in Hamburg was impossible but we had a smooth ride. Very busy road though . Arrived at Frank and Marion,s house just on lunch time, they were busy gardening and felt a bit bad about greeting us in their old clothes, hence the photo. Our welcome banner was just priceless and also the Oz flag in the garden. Good stuff. Soon settled down to a chat and a coffee. Their English is still very good and we soon got into the swing of things. When they were in Oz in 1993 they loved pies so before they left they bought a pie maker which they have still got but only used once. Also a bbq plate which they dragged back to Germany and never used. So funny, at the time they felt they needed that but of course it's different here. Walked through the town later that day and had a big ice cream and did some shopping, followed by a tasty dinner.

Today we went for a 40km bike ride to Wedel and have a look at the river Elba . It is huge and lots of cargo ships come up the river from the North Sea to unload in Hamburg. In the early days Wedel was just a house where you had to pay your cargo fees, now it is a big city . We were lucky enough to see a container ship go down the river, as it passes the old customs house, they play the national anthem of the country where the ship comes from and wishes it a safe journey The journey from Hambutg to the North Sea takes at least 4 hours for the ships so you can imagine how big the river is and very wide.
The bike ride itself was just great, we rode through towns, forrests and some lovely fields. A lot of bike riders here and they have special paths for them and of course it is flat which helps. We stopped for coffee and something to eat, was asked a small or large coffee, as normally a small cup is bugger all I decided on a large cup. What a surprise , never seen anything like that but drank it just the same and it was lovely. Rick however has not got enough meat on his backside so towards the end every time he went over a bump he yelled ouch. Couln't have been to bad as he has now recovered and having a beer and smiling again. We had a lovley day and so different
