Thu 9 December

Arrived at Bangkok International Airport at 11am local time after a sleepless 4 hour flight from Mumbai. Found a good hotel, Khaosan Palace Hotel, on Khao San Rd. Had some noodles for lunch washed down by a Chang beer. Spent most of the day just people watching and avoiding rickshaw drivers and street vendors. Intention was to have an early night after no sleep the night before but the local beer was too tempting! Got back just before midnight and I think I was asleep before my head hit the (clean) pillow.

Fri 10 December

Caught up on some much needed sleep and had a very filling ham baguette for lunch. Visited The Grand Palace that was established in 1782 by King Rama I. The 218,000 sq meters is the royal residence and contains throne halls and some government buildings. Moved on to Wat Pho, the oldest temple in Bangkok, houses a 46m reclining Buddha - see photo. Headed off in the evening to The Lumphini Stadium to watch 8 bouts of Thai boxing. This is a must-do if you are in Thailand. Buy the cheaper 500 Baht tickets and enjoy the atmosphere of the crowd and bookies. One moment it will strangely quiet and the next it will explode into chaos with the crowd cheering every kick and punch. Great!

Sat 11 December

Another late start. Hey, we're on holiday. Headed off to a Snake Farm via a short boat ride along Chao Phraya River. Sadly , our planning skills let us down as the farm closes at midday on Saturday. To fend off the slight dissapointment we went to a Sushi Bar (first for me). After a quick lesson from Ning Nang Nial I managed to use the chopsticks quite successfully. Dan was feeling a bit dodgy (dehydration from a few beers I believe!) so we came back to Khao San Rd and had a rest. Nial & I watched the second half of the Merseyside derby (haha Jon!) and then the Newcastle/Portsmouth game. We also began the 'Rich versus Nial round the world pool competition'. I am pleased to announce that I am leading 5 - nil.

Sun 12 December

As I write, Nial & Dan have successfully booked our 12 hour VIP bus from Bangkok to Krabi. We leave Bangkok at 7 this evening but will be passing through again in the next couple of months. Krabi is on the south-west coast and a hub for our next destination - an island 'tba' for our Christmas!

Hope everyone is enjoying the festivities at home and will write again soon!
