Arrived back in Lewoleba at 7pm and this time stayed at the Rejeki Hotel for 65,000INR which was much nicer than the Hotel Lewoleba where i stayed last time, with much more friendly and helpful staff. Spoke with a Pelni official who is a long term resident at the hotel and uses his room as a Pelni booking office who told me that the boat to Makassar was leaving at 10pm on the Friday. This meant that i had all day Friday to kill with no sights or anything to do in the town. I thus ended up wasting the day wandering around town aimlessly, walking along the coast and going in various warungs to pass the time. Headed up to the port close to town at 8pm and true enough the massive Pelni ship the Bukit Siguntang sailed in at about 9:30pm. Considering how small the town was i was amazed at just how many hundreds of people embarked. I paid 193,000INR {about 11 – not bad for a 27hr journey} for an economy class ticket which included basic meals of rice & fish heads plus a mattress on one of the numerous bench sleeping platforms. We first sailed to Maumere (on this leg I was the only western tourist onboard) arriving about 6am where we picked up several hundred more passengers including a Dutch couple and Daniel a fellow Brit i met back in Bajawa. Considering there must have been about 3000 people on board (occupying all the sleeping platforms as well as in the corridors; stair wells and out on deck) i was amazed and surprised that there were only four western tourists onboard.
