The shuttle minibus left at 2pm as planned with only five of us on board which surprised me as i thought it would be full. The journey was very pleasant with rolling countryside and forest covered hills the whole way. Including stops however it took 4hrs 45mins which meant we arrived in Bajawa in the dark as night falls at 6pm in these parts. This is both inconvenient for the passengers who need to then find accommodation in the dark and for the driver who has to drive the last 45 minutes in the dark. Why the bus doesn't leave at 1pm instead of 2pm and thus avoid these inconveniences is beyond me, surely it’s just common sense! Annoyingly the shuttle bus then dropped us off on the outskirts of town which meant we then had to get ojeks (motorbike taxis) into the town centre. All five of us checked into the Hotel Johny which we had been told by our ojek drivers was the cheapest place in town - 80,000INR for a single & 100,000INR for a twin room though which aint cheap in my book, especially seeing as the hotel is like a building site while they renovate it. The rooms also left a lot to be desired – no shower just bucket wash; no sink; and the bathroom floor a cm deep in water as the drain was in the corner behind the loo and totally ineffectual! Next morning i had a wander round the town but there was nothing much to see, and also went to check out the prices at the Korina & Edelweis hotels. Unbelievably they cost 150,000INR for a single room and 200,000INR for a twin. I also asked about hiring a scooter for the day and the set price is 100,000INR which is twice the price of the other places i’ve been. I just can’t comprehend how come Flores is so expensive - it’s a joke (but not funny in the slightest) and after 4 days i’ve already decided i don’t like the place. Had planned on spending a couple of days in Bajawa but changed my mind and decided to head straight to Riung up on the north coast where hopefully there will be cheap accommodation (but i doubt it!)
