Richard

Our stay next to Margaret River proved to be very quiet. We'd booked a little cottage which was lovely with its own kitchen and porch looking down to the sea. Having arrived very late in the evening we cooked ourselves some dinner (bangers'n'mash, a Fiona favourite) and collapsed into bed.

The next day we went into Margaret River itself. The town is quite small so after a quick wander round we had a drink in the local pub and some (really quite bad) food, before heading back to our cottage. The highlight of the rest of the day was a walk down on the beach at sunset. With the spray from the surf it was very picturesque and on the way back up we saw our first live Kangaroo (we'd seen others but they were all dead on the side of the road).

For our last day we thought we would go and visit some of the wineries for which Margaret River is known. Unfortunately, the weather was crap - grey, cold and drizzling - so our plan of walking between them went out the window and we decided to stay in. We could have driven around but one of the problems with visiting wineries is that unless you have someone else driving you can only visit a couple before one of you has to stop tasting for fear of being over the limit. Understandably, neither one of us fancied ferrying the other around drunk while they tried everything so we caught up on our diaries and watched Sunday afternoon films on the TV instead.

As it was Sunday we had bought ourselves a chicken for lunch and as you can see from the photos we had a nice time sitting on the porch eating it. The weather had, inevitably, cleared up by lunchtime but by then both of us had had several glasses of wine making any thoughts of driving or walking to the wineries unappealing. Oh well, maybe next time we'll get to visit the wineries!
