Richard

After waving goodbye to everyone in Melbourne, we headed off down the road to our first stop, Apollo Bay. We'd initially thought of staying in Lorne but Matt and Fiona had recommended we stay in Apollo Bay instead as it was prettier and quieter.

The Great Ocean Road is said to be one of the prettiest drives in the world, and I have to agree. Last summer Fiona and I drove up the West Coast of the US between LA and San Francisco and on this trip we'd driven the Garden Route in South Africa. However, neither one of the those trips can beat the amazing views and variety of the Great Ocean Road. It weaves its way along the coast going from right down next to the water (have an accident and come off the road at some points and you'd be in the sea!) to driving along cliffs hundreds of feet above the waves. I tried to take some shots of the views but they are inevitably a poor representation of what it was actually like. The only downside is that because the road is quite twisty whoever is driving has to keep their eyes on the road and has limited opportunities to take in the views!

Instead of staying in Lorne we decided we would stop for lunch there instead. Our book had recommended one of the fish shops on the front and Fiona (with her love of chips) thought we should try it out. The fish and chips were great and we ate them in the traditional style - out of the paper next to the sea with plenty of salt and vinegar, pickled onions and cans of lemonade. Suitably recharged we headed off again towards Apollo Bay.

Apollo Bay really is a very pretty place with a beautiful beach. Fortunately, we'd booked a little cottage to stay in and managed to bag ourselves a real bargain. We had a little porch to sit on and views out over the bay to the sea. Naturally, we made a trip to the local bottle shop and were sooner sat on our porch taking in the sunset and hoovering up some very nice white wine.

So ended our first day on the Great Ocean Road which was so far living up to and exceeding our expectations. We just hoped the rest of the time would be as good...
