Day 101

30 July 2013

"In The Lion's Den" could have been the heading ...

In Germany, BMW has two major locations were its products are made. Motorcycles are made in Berlin and cars are produced here in Munich.

I went to visit the BMW museum and BMW Welt (BMW World)today

If you like BMW’s you are indeed in the Lion’s Den. The museum and BMW Welt are right next to the BMW factory. The circular museum is redesigned every 10 years; I had visited the last time in 2003 I think ,and today if was like a new building (inside)

During the last 10 years BMW purchased Rolls Royce and the English Mini Cars

Today there are extensive displays of all three brands. The different between The museum and BMW welt is that in the museum it is all “please don’t touch” while at BMW welt it is all hand on. Anyone can sit on any motorcycle and all cars on display.   Unlike the museum there many signs to “please touch and sit “in” or “on” the car or bike. You don’t have to ask, just open the door and sit in a car if you wish and it does not matter if it is a $ 150.000 latest model super sport car.

Upstairs you can make on the spot arrangements for a test ride. The cars are rotated on a platform and driven down a ramp on to a nearby test track. Pity they did not have this arrangement for bikes.

Open cut engines are on display everywhere in order to see how things are designed and created plus how it all works. There are a few car models on display made entirely out of clay at a 1:1 scale. From these models computers take the readings for the final design.

Before arriving at the museum I happen to ride past a large dealership where I called in as I still needed some parts to fix up some minor problems with a loose front disk. The dealership looked like a BMW museum in itself including a large coffee shop and reading room.  The parts were in stock so I was able to change /fix the problem when I returned to the hostel.

I have decided to stay another day to visit the Deutches Museum, one of the largest Science and Technology  museum in Germany and most interesting. It is a hands on museum so tomorrow plenty of things to look at end and experience . Any way for those who like BMW, Rolls Royce and Mini 'shere are some pictures.
