I like to say that "Every day is an adventure." and today was no exception.
The lesson for today boys and girls: do not always trust a weather forecast that is more than three days out. The day started out great, but by sunset it got bloody cold!!! I know it was still early June, but this was waaayyy outta control. Thankfully, all those years in North Pole & Fairbanks taught me better than the Cub Scouts! Sure, be prepared.....but for cryin' out loud that means pack extra layers!!!
The drive out of St. Ignace along the south side of the U.P. was great! An awesome view of Lake Michigan for a really good stretch of road!
When I arrived at Grand Marais I found that the short route to Twelvemile Beach was closed due to construction just beyond the Log Slide turn off so, rather than wait until the next day and a much larger detour than anticipated, I figured to take a run past Grand Sable Dunes (& lake) over to Log Slide before doubling back around and setting up camp at Twelvemile Beach. Along the way I also stopped off at Sable Falls and followed them all the way down to Lake Superior. Not a long walk and, as you can see from the pictures, the falls were beautiful!
Speaking of beautiful, check out that sunset! As cold as it was, the sunset made up for it. But don't think that I didn't race right back to camp after the sun was over the horizon and then start a campfire to take the edge off! Like I said....bloody cold.
