Hannah and I have just got back from a week on the road, we started by headed down to Washington DC on the bus for a couple of days.  A very cool city to visit, so many sites and most of them free, the Smithsonian museums line the mall, are all free and really good.

Inadvertently we booked into a gay B and B; (it was straight friendly mind) breakfast was a bit of a laugh, I think the boys were wondering how a heterosexual kiwi couple ended up there, lovely renovated Victorian house, true to stereotype the owner had a great eye for antiques.

The city was very easy to get around and we just wondered from monument to museum to memorial, the city is one massive monument to the war time history of America, and a real advert for patriotism.  Very clear to see how 400 years of war has shaped this country.  We went to Arlington cemetery, which includes the Kennedy graves, changing of guard for the Unknown Soldier (very cool) and a bunch of famous US soldiers.  We happened to be there as a marine funeral was going on and saw the Marine band doing their thing, very moving and impressive.

We got back to NY and hired a car with Jude and Athol, 2010 Dodge Charger, big mother (only 700 miles on the clock) headed "up state" NY, went to Ithaca and then on to Niagara falls, stayed on the Canada side, falls amazing, city a dive, very plastic and geared up for the mass tourist market, I was expecting a Queenstown type feel and got Blackpool.  Lost at Casino, as usual.

From there we headed up to Ottawa, the Capital (who knew that?) of Canada, Athol had a UN conference so we stayed in the Hilton, it was mint.   City very cool, great buildings and good vibe, we then headed around lake Ontario back to NY, crossed the border at a place called 1000 islands, amazing houses on the islands in the river linking the Atlantic to the great lakes, very cool history in the area.

Have a few days in NY before heading down south, Hannah off to Oprah Saturday night and Athol and I going to a Mets game.

Anyway we head off to Colombia on Wednesday, now have flights from Peru on the 5th July to Costa Rica then make our way up to Mexico and will be leaving NY on the 30th Sept.

I have set up a travel to keep track of what we are doing so if you interested check out
