We arrived late on Monday evening and were met at the airport by our friend Derek, with whom we'll be staying for the next 10 days. Derek and Sarah are two great friends of ours who moved over to Annapolis 2 years ago. They've been working, procreating and building since they left, and the end results are a great little man called Max and a soon-to-be finished house.
Now, I ordinarily don't expect a red carpet to be run out, but this time around we seem to have been given a blue one. Annapolis is home to the US Naval Academy, and we've arrived right in the middle of the graduation ceremonies. As a result, it's choc full of families in blue and gold navy attire, and as part of the celebrations, the Navy Blue Angels (kind of the US same-but-different version of the British Red Devils) were in town for an aerial demonstration.
And what a demonstration. Sarah had managed to get us in to a place in the academy grounds that was as near as makes no difference at centre point for their display, which meant that the planes were literally right above us as they went into each of their fancy moves. In standard American fashion, loudspeakers played a soundtrack of rock and roll through the display, and our bleeding ears were well worth the price of admission. Probably the highlight of it all though was watching the mexican wave of screaming children ripple through the crowd as the wall of noise hit us each time the sound from planes hit us.....sick, but highly amusing ;)
It's set a high bar for other cities to reach - we're into Washington DC tomorrow.....lunch with the President?
