The view from my dormitory window in Hellesylt was out of this world, as it looked out over the green waters of the Geiranger fjord. It was a much needed pick-me-up after a murky day in Stryn, and it ended up being the best day of my trip so far...

After I'd checked in, I walked down the hill to get a view of the roaring waterfall that is the main feature of tiny Hellesylt, and then caught a ferry to the small town of Geiranger. This hour long cruise attracts many tourists as the Geiranger fjord is considered the most beautiful in Norway, and sure enough it was jaw dropping stuff.

The QE2 was docked in Geiranger and it was nice to hear some English voices again, as I'd barely met anyone from the UK up until then. Having said that, I soon escaped the tourist rat race and went walking for a few hours to get to different vantage points, each one offering a stunning view of the fjord.

The return cruise to Hellesylt was even better than the outbound one, as it was nearly 6pm and most of the guided tours had been and gone, leaving a ferry devoid of that many tourists. The sun even made a belated appearance as well, and when I got back to the hostel, I realised that I had the dormitory to myself...a nice feeling. So I sat at the desk and wrote a few postcards, looking up occasionally to get a glimpse of that view...

Hi I read your report.. It made me laugh when you said the return trip was empty of tourist.... Surely you yourself are a tourist. It makes me smile when certain people don't see themselves as tourist just because they travel in a different way....
