23/8/12

I started the day off with a picturesque run along a country road into the town of Aren, I ran past typical looking French houses and with the Pyrenees in the back ground it was just beautiful. When I got back Rhys was up and about getting all packed up, I had a quick cold shower then we were on the bikes heading for the Pyrenees. Luckily it was a lovely day so we had a magical view of the mountains as we approached them. We filled up just before the mountain pass began then we were straight into it, tight cornering, steep inclines, amazing scenery and slow campervans! When we got to the top of Col d'Aubisque, 1709m, we had a fantastic view down into the valley and of the rocky mountains, it was breath taking. Rhys couldn’t stop saying how amazing it was. We had a rest at the top however did not stay for long as we wanted to get in front of all the campervans. On the way we rode through some small tunnels which were pretty cool, we also had to dodge cows, horses, goats, sheep and many bike riders, yes push bike riders – impressive! On the down hill parts the bike riders were keeping up with us, and at times it felt like they were pulling away from me. It was great to see so many riders on the road and they had the right of way; which was great. We picked up some sandwiches and pastries in a small village then continued to our next Col. We had picked one of the stages for the Tour de France which was cool as we saw heaps of writing on the road and even a sign for Cadel Evans, I now understand how hard the Tour is. We stopped for a picnic lunch at the top of Col du Tourmalent, 2115m. By this stage we had been riding for 4 hours and not really done many miles, the traffic was so slow however the scenery was so nice it was pleasant going slow plus made cornering a lot easier. Stomachs filled we got back on the road and passed over 2 more Cols before stopping as our thumbs were getting sore from all the gear changing and breaking. We had a nice rest beside a river and decided our next move. Our plan was to get to Andorra however due to the roads being so slow we decided to ride only another 1hour then stop. We picked up supplies for dinner then headed for a camping ground, as we approached the top of another Col we realised we had just passed into Spain, the only sign to acknowledge our boarder crossing was a sign informing us of the new speed limits!

We were both hoping Spain had as many camping grounds as France as we did not want to ride for much longer; we were approaching 8hours on the road. Found a camping ground just outside the first town we passed, had to remember to greet them in Spanish and with a lot of sign language we claimed our bed for the night. Had another lovely swim in the pool, cooked dinner then had a lazy night. It was a wonderful day of riding the roads were fantastic and the cornering was fun, bring on some more mountain roads tomorrow.
