Lima was "founded" by Francisco Pizarro in 1535, and its where heīs buried, in the Lima Cathedral.  Itīs the fifth largest city in Latin America with around 8 million people.  Flying to Lima from Quito, I noticed Lima looked a LOT like the middle east...brown, desert, dusty, from the air.  But the downtown colonial area is beautiful, with the presidential palace, the Monastery of San Francisco and the Lima Cathedral.  At the presidential palace, the guards came out and did a nice high-stepping march to salute the flag at sundown.  The Monastery of San Francisco is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and has a centuries-old library with pre-conquest literature, and catacombs where thousands are buried and arranged in circular designs.  The cathedral was built in 1535 and has Pizarroīs tomb inside.
e Lima is a great city, would have loved to stay longer!
