Today was my final full day in Panama and I wanted to maximize my journey so I planned three tours. ( Miraflores Lock Visitor Center, Smithsonian, and Old town Panama.

Today I visited the Miraflores Lock Visitor Center again from a visitors perspective. The admission to the center included a 10 minute movie about the Panama Canal and a observation deck to see passing vessels from a above pass through the Miraflores locks. I also wanted to purchase some educational materials for my classes.

Next I visited the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute http://www.stri.si.edu/  The institute began as a small field station on Barro Colorado Island in 1923 and has developed into one of the leading research institutions of the world. The institutes has a variety of displays to see a variety of wildlife. There were even a few raccoons passing through the trails while touring. Again the view was great of the Pacific and the many wildlife exhibits inside and outside of the institute.

My next stop was to get something to eat and then travel to old town of Panama City called El Casco Viejo. After grabbing a bite to eat it began to rain very hard. This lasted well unto the evening with high water on most roads. The drainage system for roads in Panama is not like the US so some roads began to flood. Since we were on the causeway and could not tell how long the rain was going to last, my driver took me back to the hotel. Therefore I did not get a chance to see the old town.

Since the rainy season in Panama is from May through November down pours like these happen all the time. A bit disappointed I called it a night, grabbed me something to eat, and prepared for my trip home.
