The next day we took a long, breathtaking drive to Mt. Batur which is one of Bali’s two active volcanos.  The drive was fantastic with lakes, mountains, cliffs and more and landed us at the volcano at about 1:00.  We were then told by the locals that because of some tourists during the last eruption, anyone wanting to go to the top would require a guide.  So we submitted and paid $30 each (if memory serves me) to go to the top.  We were told it would take 3 hours both ways, which would make it tight for being out of the mountains by sunset.  It took much longer, but the climb was worth it.

All the way up you could see fantastic views in all directions.  The climb was long and exhausting but not overly difficult for those of us with proper footwear.  After a couple of hours we reached the top and saw fog settle and clear over the valley below.  The photographs cannot do it complete justice.  It is adventures like this that because of their drawn out difficulty the satisfaction and view from the top is extraordinarily great.  We were given eggs, and bananas and overpriced water and pop at the top.  We savoured the moment for about half hour then headed down.  By the time we reached the bottom we had faced the fact that sunset was going to come before we got close to Candidasa.

We started out on a different route than planned as recommended to us by the locals.  Half way up the mountain and dark some guy asked us if we wanted him to lead us there for $3 each… lol… needless to say we were priced in.  We followed him for a couple of hours and ended up at a less than spectacular hotel in Candidasa completely gassed.  A quick dinner then off to bed.  A few of us were heading to the Gili Islands the next day and the rest were heading back to the villa.
