We got up nice and early today to head out before Bernie and Cara had to attend a session. After breakfast we head out for the FDR Memorial and the Jefferson Memorial.

We decided to rent a car for the morning, in an attempt to maximize our touring in the few hours we had. We tried out Zipcar for the rental, a company that rents out a car for a few hours instead of full days. We picked up the car at the Hilton on Embassy Row. Since it was the first time we had reserved a car thru Zipcar, we were all a little unsure of how to access the car and check it out.  We of course charged ahead, as we are want to do, to pick up Stormin' Normin, the car we were renting. For some reason the Zipcar reservation wouldn’t show the make of the car, just the name, so we weren’t sure which car to ask for. The valet at the hotel got surly, because we didn’t know what car we were there for. The iPhone app I had had the ability to honk the horn (from space!) to help you locate the car. So I did. We had to argue a little bit with Gonzalo, the surely valet, until he finally agreed to walk into the garage to use the fancy card key to find the car. We finally got the car and headed out.

On the road finally, we made our way to the memorial area. Too bad home girls didn’t know where to park. But we did get a very good tour of the Jefferson and FDR Memorial area, as we circled the area twice looking for the right parking area. So much for saving time! Once we parked, though, we walked thru the FDR Memorial, which we all very much enjoyed. The Jefferson Memorial was also a lovely stop.

After the memorial stops, we headed back to take Bernie and Cara to the conference. Before settling into the Concierge Lounge for some catching up on things, Stephanie and I went to a local cupcake place. We got a few cupcakes (I’m always trying out new flavors!) to share. Now we all want shirts from the cute shop! Tomorrow we are heading out in the afternoon, after Bernie and Cara are done with their session. We are planning on going the zoo!

Bernie’s Highlight: The nice cool breeze going thru the Jefferson Memorial. It was a nice respite from the heat of the day.
Bernie’s Lowlight: The construction around the two memorials with absurd, and the signage was terrible. Made parking almost impossible.

Cara’s Highlight: Peanut butter and chocolate cupcake! After I had the cupcake, I couldn’t help but to exclaim: "This trip just keeps getting better and better!"
Cara’s Lowlight: The jerky valet guy at the hotel when we went to check out the car.

Rebecca’s Highlight: Strolling the tidal basin, even without the cherry blossoms.
Rebecca’s Lowlight: The concierge lounge was very cold this afternoon! I was more than a bit chilled! Which was annoying considering how hot it was outside… I can’t find a happy medium!

Stephanie’s Highlight: Being inspired by the quotes at the FDR Memorial.
Stephanie’s Lowlight: The scavengers in the lounge. I only knew it was 5:00 when the line for the free appetizers wrapped around the concierge lounge!
Stephanie’s Occupation of the Day: Tour guide for safety patrol groups. Those kids need to learn to budget their spending money. My first book with be called, “How to Tour as a Kid on a Budget: Get More with Less!”

My favorite part of your blog is your "high" points and "low points." Also, I love learning what new job Stephanie is going to assume. Have a great time, and thanks for keeping me in the loop.
