New Year’s Eve was the most interesting night of this time period. Stephany and I heard of two parties at some bars. One was in Rivas, the other in the neighboring town of San Jorge. We headed down to the bar in Rivas at about 9:30. When we showed up there were maybe five people there… what the hell, it’s early right? Wrong
We decided to head to San Jorge to try to catch the next party. Problem was, apparently all the taxis stop working at 10pm on New Year’s too. We ended up walking a mile back to her house. We borrowed her dad’s motorcycle and made it to San Jorge at about 10:50 and to no surprise there was nothing going on in the whole town. Jesus… so much for the bar scene.
We had an hour left so we cut our losses, went to the liquor store and bought a huge bottle of wine. We went back to Stephany’s and sat out in the street and watched the fireworks and danced together. Nicaraguans celebrate New Year’s much like we do the 4th with tons of fireworks. Although there were no parties and Nicaragua doesn’t have "the ball", the night actually ended well with our own private little party.
