We stayed one night at the Thermal Hotel Balmaz in Balmazujvaros, a small town on the border of the Hortobagy National Park. Constantly expecting very basic hotels on this bike tour, we were impressed to arrive at a 4-star accommodation. Our rooms were regally decorated with navy blues and dark wood furniture, and our shower was enormous. It was perfect for pampering ourselves after soaking in the outdoor thermal spas. Although we didn't have time, this hotel also has pool tables and its own bowling alley!

At this location, there is one pool designated for hotel guests with the iodine-colouration. Beyond that, we had access to a community complex with multiple pools at different temperatures, including one for swimming lengths.

Not expecting too much, we decided to dine at the hotel patio overlooking the spa. However, we ended up constantly telling each other how this was the best meal thus far on the trip. My own choice was a duck entrée with Hungarian white wine.

Noticing the awesome hanging palinka vessels at the bar, I had to give that a try too!
