By the time I had arrived in Mersing it was dark and I had missed the last ferry over to Tioman, Roy having left earlier in the day. I found a cheap hotel and checked in for the night and after a quick bite to eat got an early night to get up for the first the ferry in the morning.

I was up before dawn and trekked down to the jetty to find the the 7.30 ferry had been cancelled and the next one would not be leaving until 10. I settled down in the light drizzle for a long wait eventually the time came and after a three hour fairly tortuous boat ride, arrived at Tioman Island on Air Batang Beach, a sleepy strip of chalets and dive centres set along a small concrete path and backed by jungle.
