In very uncharacteristic fashion Renu and I actually signed up for a tour of Valparaiso and Viņa del Mar (great choice!).  There's no way we could have seen as much as we did on foot in that time.  It started off slow, but we were able to see some sights that were off the beaten path and really beautiful not to mention make a few friends.  Renu wanted to adopt an adorable Mexican girl named Valeria.  The other highlight was this 3 year old Chilean kid who was like the Rain Man of cars.  He would call out the make of each car we passed on the street in high pitched Spanish (photos of both of them included).

Valpo is a working/middle class port town with something like 45 hills leading down to the water although it has no beach.  Colorful houses are stacked on top of one another amid steep, winding streets.  The centro is a little grungy, but there were some really cute areas like Cerro Alegre.  Viņa del Mar, on the other hand, is the higher-end sister town with a long, pretty beach.  My favorite thing was just being close to the water...it always feels like home no matter where I may be.

In both towns, there was a decent amount of earthquake damage.  Most of it was not readily apparent, but there was structural damage to some of the older buildings.  Maybe the earthquake is one of the reasons we haven't seen many tourists.

In any event, this daytrip made our stay in Santiago totally worthwhile.  Gotta run and check out of our hotel now.  We've got the day in Santiago before catching a night flight down to Punta Arenas.  Check out the map...we'll be about as far south as you can get without being in Antarctica.  After a quick sleep, we're off to Torres del Paine and a whole lotta nature!
