After admiring the view and the lighthouse we headed for the bridge to Canada but got sidetracked at Monica's Chocolates. We met Monica who makes the most delicious chocolates in the world, yes, even better than Godiva. We bought some raspberry wine truffles and turtles and sea urchins (her specialty). Her secret ingredient comes from Peru, she told us. Loaded down with chocolates in our fridge, we made it through Customs into Canada
. Campobello is bigger than we had expected and we spent the whole day there. The big attraction is the only international park in the world. Franklin Delano Roosevelt spent every summer in Campobello with his family while he was growing up. His mother, Sarah, gave him and his wife, Eleanor, a "cottage" of their own where they spent summers with their six children. You can tour the cottage (which is a mansion) for free. There is a museum with lots of fun information about the Roosevelt’s. I love to live vicariously through the rich and famous so this was great for me and Nels loves the historical element. FDR is well loved and remembered here. But if that is not enough to entertain you, they have 2,800 acres of nature trails, coastal beaches, cranberry bogs, and the coolest lighthouse I’ve ever seen. You can only get to it when the tide is out. The tides drop 22 feet here, five feet per hour, and there are signs warning you that you can get caught out at the lighthouse after climbing down one huge metal ladder, crossing over seaweed covered rocks, then climbing up a huge metal ladder to the bluff and lighthouse. We saw many finback whales and heard them blow and huff and puff and show off how big they are. It was a beautiful experience and a wonderful day. Randi
Campobello, Canada You can drive to Canada in the blink of an eye from Lubec Maine which is close to Eastport. And so, rather than sit and soak up the sunshine, we headed out for another expedition because we heard that Campobello is a beautiful island with lighthouses, whale watching, and hiking trails. In Lubec they have a spectacular lighthouse at West Quoddy which is the easternmost point in the USA. Looking out on the Atlantic you can see Canada, just like Sarah Palin can see Russia from Alaska.
