One full month in Porto now. I have slowed down a lot here, and I would have to anyway, I didn't come here to keep hopping from country to country, it was already more than enough to visit Spain and Morocco (although I will still probably pay a visit to Galiza, since it is so close and it seems to be the only place where I can buy the books I've been looking for - but I really think libraries and bookstores in the north of Portugal should carry books in Galician language!). Anyway, now I am beginning to feel my goal in visiting Porto is accomplished - I have met my rather distant relatives who live in the surroundings, some of which took me on a tour through my grandfather's village, including the place where he lived (which is empty now) and his school (which still stands) and, more importantly, I have now been here for long enough a time to develop some kind of link to the city.
That means the time for change is drawing nigh, especially considering that for most of this month I have been lodged by a cousin of my grandfather (who opened his house for me after we met but once, and probably did not talk beyond 'hi, it's a pleasure to meet you') and sometimes I (still) feel like I am abusing his hospitality, in spite of statements to the contrary. And, on top of all that, the road calls me.
So, for the next step, I have been nurturing a project that came up in my mind before I set for this trip and was deemed unfeasible. I just came accidentally upon it again an, thinking once more, the reasons that led me to drop it do not seem so strong anymore. It is a daunting project, though, so I am letting the information about it leak in small steps (I find that helps a lot in building up momentum) while I do some more research to finally find out whether it is possible or not. I still have some time left, there are some more relatives I must visit and some more corners of the area I must see, then I will make my decision. If this project does take off, it will be a great way to get a feeling for the country, way better than settling down and working, which was my original plan. We will see.
