I couldn't really spend as much time as I wanted in the Åland Islands, as I have to be around Helsinki by Friday evening for the HC meeting (my first large one). This meeting made me change my Finnish schedule completely, but hopefully will be worth it. So I caught in Stockholm, on Wednesday afternoon, the slow boat to Mariehamn, which brought me here before eight in the morning. My only other option would be to take a later boat and arrive here around midnight, which would be really pointless. Well, at least I don't spend with accomodation, I am really in need of some saving...
Fortunately, the weather for today was as fine as possible, and thus allowed me to do a lot of exploring. First on the main streets, with their painted wooden houses and lots of green space, while I waited for the tourist information office to open. And when it did, the advice I was giving on how to spend a day in the islands involved mostly museums, which really were not the reason that had brought me there. So I just decided to ditch the advice and go for random walking around (actually I tried to rent a bike first, but I had forgotten my passport in the luggage and the guy wouldn't give me a bike without one). In the end it was a really enjoyable, around 8 hours long, walk in the islands. Some very good scenery, and I never wanted to stop when I could just walk a little bit further and see some more. I even managed to leave the main island on foot through one of the car bridges, dodging the few ones that passed by (no pedestrian lane there).
Some time, though, I had to stop, when my legs and stomach couldn't do any more going on. And then I had to go back all the way, which was really tiring. A much needed 19 o'clock lunch and then some slow motion touring until I had to head for the midnight boat towards Helsinki.
The main town in the islands is a really nice place, with its very calm and slow atmosphere even in a summer working day. There is one fault with these islands, though, and it is that their people only speak Swedish... Come on, we are already in Finland! :P

where to?
Henrique, I loved your last posted picture... Did you take time to take it all in? I´m sure your long walk did you wonders. If it wasnt the risk of getting hit by a car, I´d recommend you to freeze right there and daydream for a while. :) Peace out! ;)

What language?
This teacher of yours forgot to tell you that there are two official languages in Finland, and that Aland is one area of the 8/9% (?) of Swedish speaking Finns.

Ah, and I thought that only Tom Hanks used to walk on and on in that film ...

Hope you'll hear some Finnish in Helsinki - they say that people there speak English, Russian, German ... and, of course, Swedish !!!
