Where I stayed
We left bright & early at 6am ready for a long haul in the car. We're trying to get as close to the coast as we can. We spotted our 1st Kangaroos beside the road.
Arriving at Longreach by 8.30am. All the tourist attractions were closed but we still took the token pictures in front of the Qantas Boeing 747 & drove over to the Stockman's hall of fame. Braiden would of loved the Qantas Museum to of been opened so he could of seen everything. Well at least it's another trip we could do later on.
In the car again, a short 15mins down the road we came to Ilfracombe & the mad mile of machinery. Boys being boys had to get out & sit on each & everyone of them
Next short stop off was Barcaldine. With the Tree of Knowledge. It was here in 1891 in the National Shearers Strike the tree was a silent witness between the shearers & Pastoralists over wages & working conditions which in turn formed the first labour party. The tree was poisoned in
about 2006. But this reminder of our earlier days is great. There was also some brilliant looking pubs around town.
It was now sheep country a little bit more greener but not by much. Kites were thriving with the amount of road kill of roos & were gathered in great flocks.
We unfortunately hit our 1st wildlife a kookaburra out of all things flew straight out of a tree in front of us Jay tried braking hard but all it did was give us whiplash & the poor bird suffered a sad end to his day.
Getting closer to Emerald some of the bridges we crossed actually had water under, it was a sight to see, we were extremely excited by this as for the last 4 weeks everything was dry
We filled with petrol & had lunch from the bakery at Alpha before we headed towards Emerald. When got in contact with mum & dad. They had arrived an hour earlier only to find the road to the Caravan park we wanted to stay at was closed. So I ran the Discovery park & they gave us directions to enter another way. On our way through town I saw "The Big" Van Gough sunflower painting towering over an oval but having a few heated discussions on the directions we were to take & having been driving for 8hrs there was no stopping for a photograph. A quick McDonalds break to keep Bella happy & it was finally in the right direction of Lake Maraboon Discovery Park.
We arrived at 2.30pm. Its a beautiful park right next to Lake Maraboon. Birds are every where. It's cool & shady. The afternoon was spent relaxing with our feet in the pool, watching the local bird life flying around us making a huge racket.
