Trip End
Ongoing
didn't expect an entry from Falmouth did ya? well... it's true. i'm home. i am supposed to be in Indonesia right now. after that Australia, not due to return until December...ish.
allow me to explain...
upon arrival in Vietnam, i checked my email and was shocked to find that i had a message from Bobby Farrelly, of Farrelly Brothers fame, director of such films as "Dumb & Dumber," "There's Something About Mary" and "Outside Providence." i had the chance to meet him in December of 2004 thanks to a family connection, and i got to spend the day with him as he worked on "Fever Pitch." cool stuff.
he asked what i'm up to, and i responded that i'm in Vietnam, on my way to Australia and so on. after a few exchanges, he lets me know that he is working on a new film, and would i like to be his assistant for the entire production?
there wasn't much of a question for me. i hesitated to give up on the rest of my trip, my plans to live in Australia again, that amazing place down under that i haven't stopped talking about since i left in 2003, but this opportunity is too good to pass up, and i had to take it. though i questionned my ability to go from doing whatever i want, whenever i want, to doing whatever Bobby Farrelly wants, whenever he wants, i realized that really this will all just be part of the adventure. the shooting will be in LA, San Francisco and Mexico, and the experience will be awesome, for me and my dream career in the film industry.
so... i finished up in Vietnam, rushed it really, hopped a flight to Japan, and then Texas and on to Boston. now i'm back on Cape Cod, adjusting to meals that don't involve rice or noodles, and streets that have more cars than scooters. today i went grocery shopping at Super Stop & Shop. as i walked outside, my dad read my face and with a smile said... "culture shock?"
you betcha.
so, if you're around, it'll be great to see you, and allow me to apologize in advance for comparing everything around me with Europe or SE Asia. for example: "you think this ice cream is good? have you ever tried the gelato in Italy?" and god forbid you're around when i purchase anything. i bought a 20 oz. bottle of water today for $2.00. that would buy 7 - 1.5 liter bottles of water in Bangkok, Thailand. imagine what i could buy with the $65 it cost to fill up my gas tank!
one more thing... apparently, i've lost weight. i've been made aware of this, and i'm working on a solution.
so i guess this is the end... for now. i may still use this when i bounce around for the upcoming production, but who knows. my entries would read like this: "...so then i'm left standing next to Ben Stiller, and what do i say? 'did you ever think there's more to life than being really, really, ridiculously good looking?' a la his film Zoolander. doh!"
in parting... i'd like to share a passage from Thomas F. Hornbein's book Everest: The West Ridge as quoted in Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer, which i read while in Lao.
"There was loneliness, too, as the sun set, but only rarely now did doubts return. Then I felt sinkingly as if my whole life lay behind me. Once on the [trip] I knew (or trusted) that this would give way to a total absorption with the task at hand. But at times I wondered if I had not come a long way only to find that what I really sought was something I had left behind."
thanks for reading, keeping up and keeping in touch.
lots of love
