Hello Redmond El students! Lets go travel!
Nov 01, 2007
When we touched down in Anchorage, they warned us it might be turbulent with some bumps because of the weather
. It wasn't very bad though, so I didn't get scared. But it is raining here. That is too bad because the mountains around Anchorage are very pretty and they are probably getting some snow on them right now.
I have a few hours off, and then I head across two countries (Canada and the US) and land in Memphis Tennessee. You should be able to find Tennessee on a map because the Mississippi river flows on the Western border, and Memphis is just east of the river in the Southwest corner of the state. Maybe you have heard of the singer Elvis Presley? He lived in Memphis, and you can go on a tour of his mansion called "Graceland". Memphis is also known for their Jazz music, and BBQ restaurants.
Welcome to a new school year and adventures around the world. I am starting off today from SEATAC airport on a flight leaving at 7am. I had to get up at 4:30am to get out to the Airport! Wow, that is early! Luckily, I could sleep on the plane, so by the time I got to Anchorage Alaska, I was rested and ready to go! It was very foggy this morning at SEATAC, but my pilots were able to find their way on the ground by carefully following special taxi charts, and saw the bright taxi lights that the Airport has installed on all the taxiways and runways. They use different colors for each part of the Airport: Green for taxiways, blue for runway edges, white for runway center-line and red for stop lines. Plus the airplane I was flying on, a FedEx MD-11, has a Heads Up Display (or HUD) that can display an infra red picture and allows the pilots to "see through" the fog. Pretty neat stuff.
