Where I stayed

The flight from Auckland was pretty uneventful apart from being 45 minutes late. We were due bad turbulence but nothing really came of it which I was pretty pleased about.

Got through immigrations and customs absolutely fine and got through to the other side where you were bombarded by people trying to get you to stay at their hostels and sell you trips.

Luckily for me I had already organised my hostel so my coach was waiting for me outside.  I jumped in and we headed towards my hostel.  As soon as we left the airport, I felt like I was i India. There were Indian people everywhere, dogs running around the streets and the roads where all over the place. Nothing like the countries I'm used to. I think the reason why the roads are so bad was due to the floods recently that hit the country.

Anyway, got to the hostel and I was pleasantly surprised.  It was more like a hotel than a hostel.  No kitchen or shower blocks.  I had a room with 8 bunk beds and there were4 of us in there.  Ensuite bathroom, nice!  There was a swimming pool and poolside bar, games room and restaurant. Looking good, especially as I got this for free from STA.

By the time I had unpacked, it was around 5 pm and suddenly the heavens opened.  Hmmm, I have to appreciate it is the rainy season now.  The rain never stopped all night but it was quite a blessed relief as it cooled it down slightly.  When I got off the plane, I was wearing a Hoodie, t shirt, jeans, socks and walking shoes.  Soon stripped off as the sweat was pouring off me.

As there was no kitchen, I had to eat in the restaurant tonight, so I decided to go for something healthy and had a chicken salad, which came with smoked chicken, tomato, lettuce,  avocado and cucumber.  Well, when it was served,it looked like a wet salad with a few things dumped on top.  There was no avocado at all, so I went back.  They told me it was a avocado paste (yeah right) so they squeezed some more on top for me.  It tasted bloody awful so I won't be trying to be healthy again!

Not many people around so I ended up going back to my room around 8 ish, having a shower and watching Breaking Bad on my laptop before going to bed around 10.30 pm.  Hopefully the rain will stop in the morning.

1st March - Nadi

At last, the rain has stopped. Everything was soaking outside, but a least it wasn't raining. I decided I was going to walk up the street to where the shops and the supermarkets are.  I am about 5 kms away from Nadi town centre so the local shops will have to do. I thought I would be able to find a cafe or something to have some breakfast as what they serve in the restaurant wasn't good.

Well, I wasn't super what i was expecting but there were no cafes.  It was all Indian shops and supermarkets and nothing good to eat.  The only places that served food was hot food and curry. Not what I want for breakfast.  I thought I would buy some food in the supermarkets to take with me to the islands and also to make some lunch (bearing in mind there is no kitchen facilities).  There was no cold meats, no bread, basically nothing that I could easily put together.  The grocery shopping over here is completely different to what we have back in the western world.  All I ended up buying was 2 packets of crisps and a bottle of Fizzy Lemon to mix with my bottle of Vodka that I bought(advised to buy this in duty free as it saves money over on the islands).  Hmmm nice and healthy.

I had been out for about an hour and thought that the restaurant would have stopped serving breakfast but luckily enough they hadn't.  I ended up having pancakes with maple syrup and banana's for breakfast.  Really bad,but tasted really nice and swimming in maple syrup.  I missed Shrove Tuesday so this makes up for it.

The rest of the day was spent lying around the pool as the sun was out and it was blazing hot.  Had to keep jumping in the pool as it was so hot.

It started to rain again around 3.30 pm so I decided to go and have a shower and repack my bag with all of my summer cool clothes on top and my jeans, hoodie etc all at the bottom.  Had a little snooze and got up again around 6 pm. The sun was out again as it's looking good for the islands.

I decided to break open my vodka, as I hadn't had a drink for a few day sand need to keep up the drinking!!!! Started chatting to a guy round by the pool.  His name is Stuart and is from Bournemouth(26).  I overheard him talking to another couple earlier on about the islands, so I asked him what his plans were.  He was going tomorrow, the same as me, but he was only going for 5 days.

We ended chatting most of the night and going to dinner together.  before any of you say anything, nothing happened, it was just a good ole friendly chat.

It's nice to know that I have a friend to travel with tomorrow, even if it is only for a few hours!
