Where I stayed
What I did
I haven't really seen Byron in it's true light as it has been raining ever since I got here which makes it feel a little dull.
I am staying at the Arts Factory which is pretty cool, especially if you like the odd joint or two! I wouldn't say it's amazing as some people have told me, maybe because I'm not that alternative, but I must say I feel very comfortable there and no one judges you or looks you up and down to see what you are wearing. Anything goes here.
Last night (or I should say tonight) they had a talent show and oh my god, the people that performed and sang were absolutely amazing
Today was all about Nimbin. I went on a bus trip there. It is a small town heading west into the mainland. In 1974 it was a dying dairy farm community. There was a music festival held there called Aquarious, which the town agreed to have. They knew this was going to be about hippies and the alternative lifestyle. What happened after the festival was most people left, but some of the hippies stayed behind and this is what made Nimbin what it is today. Our driver Jim looked just like one of those people. Actually he looked completely stoned when he picked us up but I'm sure he wasn't, it's just that look!
When we arrived, we drove through the one main street and it was full of very strange and alternative looking people all in their tie dye and hemp clothing! As soon as we got off the bus people were asking if we wanted to buy cookies (the famous cookies!) or weed. I didn't buy any of course as I am a good girl!!!!!! The place was really weird and full of odd shops. The museum they have there is dedicated to weed and the alternative side. You will see by the photo's.
I popped in to the local convenience store where I was greeted by this huge smiley face of a black cat. She was so adorable. She was sat on the ice cream counter and as soon as I walked up to her she climbed up my chest and nuzzled her way into my scarf that I was wearing. God I miss my little babies!
We stayed here for about 2 hours before we headed off to have our lunch at Rocky Creek Dam close by. Whilst we were there, some schoolies that were sat next to me on the bus asked if I wanted a cookie as their friend had chickened out, so of course I said yes. OMG - Parents, get the men in white coats and bring me back to the UK, your daughter ate some hash and got high!!!!!
Before you judge me, I am pretty sure that some, if not all, have tried it at some point in their lives. All I have to say is that after about an hour, it hit me and all I wanted to do was go to sleep. One guy on our bus had a real bad time on it. Not sure where he got his from, but it didn't have that affect on me. Two young guys bought some mushrooms and they were so funny. They were running around by the dam thinking they were Jesus. They told us that they had walked all the way across the Dam (they could walk on water) and a load of other weird and hilarious stuff.
Got back to the hostel around 6 ish and needed to have a sleep for a while before my friend Maddy woke me up to tell me dinner was ready. God she is a good girl and looks after me well!
Hopefully this next paragraph will make you all chuckle. Since arriving at Byron on Sunday, the weather has turned (it is officially now summer here) and it has been raining constantly and it is about 22 degrees. I am walking around in Jeans, fleece and a waterproof jacket. I really feel like I have gone back home. I won't be doing much for the next few days and Friday I head off to Coffs Harbour.
You will all be pleased to hear that I have managed to book a hostel in Sydney for Christmas & New Year. It has cost me $70 a night for 7 nights. Crazy but I have to pay it! At least I will be able to witness one of the best fireworks displays in the world!!
