Where I stayed
What I did
Relxaed and sunbathed
It's on the coast heading down towards Townville. No mobile phone reception and no internet. Bliss!
I stayed in a hostel called Absolute Backpackers, it was luxury compared to some of the other places I had stayed in. When I first got there though, I did have to ask to change rooms as when I walked in, the room stank. I can't describe what it was but I was not going to be breathing in those fumes, whatever they were. The owner was really good and put me in a freshly painted room which had no bunkbeds. Happy days!
For the next 3 days, all Anni and I did was relax by the pool and walk along the beach. The pool was amazing. It had only just been finished and had a spa built in so you could sit there and have bubbles blown up yer !!!
The first night the hostel put on a free Wallaby tour. We drove to South Mission where wild wallabies roam around where the locals live. They are still very frightened of humans so run away when you get to close.
The owner showed us some of the pictures after Cyclone Yasi hit them earlier this year. They were in the eye of the Cyclone and the damage was unbelievable. I can't comprehend what it must have felt like for everything to be either blown of swept away within a couple of hours. You can still see evidence of the Cyclone when you walk along the beach and see the trees snapped in half or some even sunk further down the beach in the sand. Why do people live in these places. They have Cyclones every year along with the rainy season. Hmmm, I know it's beautiful, but still!
The following day we took the free bus to North Mission Beach. I must explain that Mission Beach is part of a 14 km coastline which takes in Binglin Bay, North Mission Beach, Mission Beach (or Wongalin Beach) and South Mission Beach. There were a couple of shops there but absolutely nothing to keep you occupied. This is a place where you either relax or do one of the many adrenalin junkie activities on offer, like skydiving onto the beach, white water rafting, etc
We walked along the beach back to Mission Beach which takes around an hour. There is a lovely creek that you have to walk through to cross the beach. Be careful though, croc's are lurking!!!
The final day was pretty much the same thing but without Anni, as the owner had asked if Anni wanted to earn some money cleaning. $20 an hour which isn't too bad. Apparently I couldn't do it as I didn't have a working visa. Really, do I look like someone who wants to do a bit of cleaning. I'm trying to impersonate an aboriginal person here, I need to work on my tan! I took the bus to North Mission beach again, but did the hike through the Cutten track. This is a short hike through the rainforest which then meets the beach. It was a lovely walk and took me around 45 minutes. I don't think I have ever walked so much in my life and I had to advise that I am definately losing weight, not much but it's coming off!!
I sat on the beach for a while watching all the skydivers hurtling towards me which was awesome. They land so gracefully! Walked back to the hostel and chilled out by the pool waiting for Anni.
Made another new friend today, Martina from Rome
Mission Beach has been the most relaxing part of my trip, but even 3 days of doing nothing has bored me a little. Time for some excitement.
Bring on Magnetic Island. Does anyone know why it was called this. Message me if you do and i'll let you know if it's right! No cheating by googling the answer!
Oh, I keep forgetting to tell you all. I haven't had a cigarette in a month now. How good is that!
