We had a day off this week with the Korean Parlimentary Voting so we took to the streets of Seoul for a day of good food and good sights. Sam, Jen, Cassio, Grace and I started out in Itaewan at the Flying Pan Blue for brunch - and the best french toast I've ever had! Brioche french toast with a berry compote and ricotta cheese - yum! I wanted to try everything on the menu. We'll definitely be back soon. Grace and I spent the rest of the day in meandering in Insadong; poking into shops, eating hoeddok, hiking in the park, visiting the Chicken Art shop (not to be confused with the Chicken Art Museum), and taking in the warm weather
On Saturday, Sam Grace and I headed out to Yeouido for the Cherry Blossom Festival. It was a bit disappointing since the cherry blossoms in the park had not bloomed yet, but we took part in the festival anyway by painting, eating street food and taking in the sunshine. Afterwards, we headed out to Insadong again (yes, this is quickly becoming my favourite haunt in Seoul) and discovered wonderful little tea cafes that overlook the busy streets. You can sit and sip while enjoying the spring breeze and people watch.
We returned early Saturday night to welcome the latest addition to our foreign teaching staff. Necia just arrived from California. She will be replacing Derek who finishes his contract next week and will be returning to Texas. She seemed to be in much better shape than I was when I first arrived in Korea. Granted that she arrived earlier in the evening than I did, but overall she seems to be adjusting pretty well so far. We all took her out for her first dinner in Korea: bibimbap and kimbap. Kimbap is the Korean version of sushi, just no raw fish. She`s vegetarian too, although I think a more strict vegetarian than I will ever be. I think it would be very difficult to be a strict vegetarian in Korea. It can be done, but it`s not easy since everything is cooked in some fish or meat. If you are one of those people who permit fish and seafood in your diet, then it`s definitely a great place to eat!
