After months of planning and plotting, today marks the first day of our great circle route road trip to San Francisco. Just last night we were, of course, running around like chickens with our heads cut off trying to get ready to be gone for a month and absolutely convinced that we would never make it, much less get everything we need into our Prius! It didn't help that we had events scheduled for every day in the week leading up to the trip and a workshop the day before. But somehow, a miracle happened and we were pulling out of our driveway at a little after 7:00 this morning.

Perhaps our favorite stop today was at Moose Cafe for lunch. It's a great place for southern cooking located right in the Farmer's Market in Asheville, NC. Did we really need hamburger steak, smoked pork chops, squash casserole, collard greens, baked onions and biscuits? Yes, to provide strength for the journey

The drive through the Smokey Mountains was beautiful. I love these wonderful old mountains in every season. It was interesting to look at the slashes cut into the bedrock to accommodate the road and the piles of boulders corralled behind wire netting where previous rock slides had taken place. This incredibly scenic road has no pullouts, so picture taking was not a part of the action today.

We did see a few interesting sights along the way. Not the least of which was a bright yellow motorcycle/scooter/car vehicle with riders in matching helmets. We HAD to get a photo of that!

Once we left the mountains somewhere in Tennessee and cut up toward St. Louis, the terrain changed to "heartland of America" and agriculture as far as the eye could see. We decided to drive as far as we could today and finally stopped after nearly 700 miles in Paducah--not a glamour spot. But we did find a nice new hotel with a whirlpool. Now that we're completely relaxed, it's off to get a good night's sleep and another long drive tomorrow.

I am just now getting around to looking @ your blog. THANKS for blogging! I love "wishing I was there" and seeing the great photos. I see y'all too love the Moose Cafe. Catherine and I had lunch there also when I visited her @ LJ. That yellow thing you saw and took a photo of is a "trike" a converted motorcycle (usually a Honda Goldwing) into a 3 wheeler. I know this because my good friend Keith Ferguson got a white one a few months ago and him and his daughter Jamie, rode it from Jackson out to the Grand Caynon and parts inbetween for a 2 week dad/daughter trip. He too had a trailer although not matching because it was a frends. The landlord to V's and I's 1st home was from Paduka.
