Sorry i haven't added much lately i have been busy working, writing lots of materials and tests.

Students
Students have started emailing me - they are getting braver. When they give me their Chinese names i like to look up the meanings, I asked one girl 陈希玥 if her name meant something like "special pearl" here is her reply...

"Thank you for understanding me.I always enjoy your class~:-D
My name does means something like special pearl ,but in China, there're several beautiful tales behind it. Here is the stories.
One of the stories is...long long ago, when a prince wasborn,a  multicolored phoenix called many birds come around the baby, thenthe phoenix threw a stone to the baby's hand.Suddenly,an earthquakehappened, old trees fell, and the stone cracked,a beautiful pearl came out.People were happy, because that means lucky.A fairy passed, found the bright pearl so lovely, felt the baby will be a monarch someday,so he named this special pearl "玥"."

Aren't Chinese names so lovely! Isn't that a great story!

Another girl sent me a picture of her and her friends, one lad, who'd had to remind me when it was the end of class, asked me what my opinion of his was.

I have said we can arrange a time when they can all chat to me and ask questions - after all they will be coming to Scotland in 2 or 3 years so it will be good for them to find out as much as they can.

On Thursday I bumped into 2 Americans at the guesthouse, they are here teaching English, one stays here, the other used to stay here. They took me to a place that serves.... western food. I felt a bit bad eating western food - as i had only been here 2.5 weeks - but as only western was on the menu I ordered the same as what they had... steak and chips, a salad, a drink, we also got soup and toast... it cost 元32 (3.20) The older American guy who has been here a few years said - "it isnt cheap like it used to be". I had read about this but .. it is cheap enough!

On Friday I went into town, so took a few pictures of a few of the shops. It is funny when random people take pics of me, but maybe it's not surprising - i have been here 3 weeks and have only ever spotted two other foreigners like me (apart from the americans at the guesthouse).

by the side of the road this lady was making these really detailed; insects, flowers and frogs -元10 (1) i had to get one just because she made such a good job. Obviously it's starting to turn brown now - but it is still cool.

I like all the little shops, they are so different and interesting, i tried a profiterole type cake from this bakery type shop. Right next door was a little hardware store, then a juice bar. The sweet/snack shop was at the underground station - I didn't go to this particular one, but did visit the one near campus - it is really interesting; snacks of all sorts- from nuts, to chicken feet, to dried fruit to chocolate.

I wasn't sure what to do (how to get the items) but the staff & other customers were so helpful and bought me bags, even filled the bag for me heheheh ;) i didn't mind, we were all laughing because we couldn't communicate, one customer tried to speak a little English, and i a little Chinese, we managed to get by. I got a bag of these little chocolate things with spoons they cost 元 3.20  (32p)

In one of the department stores (3rd floor ) yes... a guy on a moped drove past!!! and into the lift!!! See some really funny things here - it makes it so interesting!

On Saturday night i went out for supper with luo jialin (the girl who came to chat to me after i got off the bus last week - On tuesday i also had invited her to English corner and she'd written a page about Scotland). I gave her some UK chocolate and she gave me these Chinese snacks - when i opened them they were little sticks (like the shape of our old chewing gum)

Anyway we went to one of the student canteens - we went to order and the staff asked luo jialin things about me like where I am from. It is very funny going into places and having people react differently because I am a foreigner. I don't mind at all - i just smile and laugh and try and say a few words in Chinese. Some of the locals know me now and in the local shop the owner got a student to say "your Chinese has improved" hahahaha. Food cost about 元 10 or 12 (1.00 or 1.20)

While luo jialin and I ate dinner and asked each other many questions. She is from Xi'an - where i would love to go - it is where the terracotta army is. We laughed a lot when we couldn't communicate and sometimes we drew pictures for each other to help - we taught each other words. She was very happy when i told her that her English was very good and she learns quickly.

luo jialin told me how many classes she has a week ( see timetable sketch) - plus she has to go into town to do the CET English classes on a Saturday morning. Had a good night.
