Saturday saw me making my way back to Cancun by colectivo again.  I spent the afternoon on Isla Mujeres, just off the Cancun coast.  That night saw me meeting up with the organised group that I would be spending the next 10 days with.  We went out for some group bonding over quesadillas from the market as Saturday night is party night in the park.

Sunday was an early start to get to Chichen Itza, the first of a few Maya archeological sites I'll get to see.  Our tour leader is from Guatemala, so we are learning a lot about the Mayans at the moment.  There are a few buildings in various states of ruin, while some have been restored.  The pyramid that dominates the site is the Temple of Kukulkan.  The ancient Maya were keen astronomers, and many of their buildings line up with spring and autumn equinoxes.  Their architects and engineers must have been geniuses as well.  For example, you can stand in front of the Temple of Kukulkan and clap and you get an echo.  Not unusual.  Stand directly in the front of the centre of the staircase and clap and the echo comes back sounding like one of the local birds.  Even today nobody has come up with an explanation for this!

After Chicen Itza we visited a cenote nearby called Ik Kil.  I didn't go for a swim in this one, but it was absolutely beautiful, completely different to the other cenotes I have seen so far!  This one is a proper 'sink hole'.

Sunday night saw us in Merida, tired and hungry.  We ventured to the market stalls where I tested the elote, corn on the cob on a stick.  The difference between this and normal corn on the cob was it was covered in mayo, then a little bit of chilli and then very finely grated cheese!!  Tasted better than it sounds! :)  I also tested out a marquesita with cheese and chocolate.  The marquesita is made sort of like a crepe, and they roll it up with whatever the filling of choice is.  As it cools it hardens so it's like an icecream cone.  Also nice, even the nutella/cheese combination!!
