I caught an early morning flight to Alor Setar and split a taxi to the Thai border. Tommy was at the race also and luckily for me had a buddy picking him up from the Duty Free shop at the border. They gave me a ride to Hat Yai and put me on a local minibus to Trang so I made record time from KL to Trang in under 6 hours. If any of you have tried this trip, you know what a miracle that is. This is also including crossing the Thai border after being in Thailand for 6 of the last 7 months even with the new immigration rules. Fortunately, I talked the immigration guy at the airport in Bangkok to write in my passport that I start a new 6 month period on this entry so they let me back in without any hassle. I caught every connection just right until I got to Trang and had to wait 45 mins for a mini bus to Pak Meng Pier. I missed the regular 12 o'clock boat to Koh Ngai and had to charter a long tail boat by myself. I was told that it would cost ~1,200B to charter a boat, but I managed to pretend well enough that I was going to wait for the 4 o'clock boat that I got the captain down to 600B. The hour long ride out was beautiful. The islands around Trang form a magnificent seascape. Unfortunately, the vibe on Koh Ngai wasn't all that great nor was the rubbish laden beach. I spent a few days there as the snorkeling was good, but with the sea lice biting me everyday, it was time to go. I wanted to go to Koh Kradan, but I heard the sea lice there was even worse and the beach wasn't very nice so I decided to take a pass and head back to Lanta for Songkran, the water festival and Thai New Year. Unfortunately, I was unarmed with my bag in the back of open air taxi. Not a good situation, but I managed to get through the gauntlet in Saladan mostly dry with a garbage bag around my bag. Obviously, I don't have any pictures.
