I can hardly believe it.  Today marks exactly 1 year since I boarded a one way flight bound for Taipei, Taiwan.  I'm a year older, no wiser, a bit worse for the wear, but have a belly full of great memories, great food, heaps of new friends and an ever expanding readership.  It won't be long before I can start making and breaking guest houses on my recommendations alone like the Lonely Planet just by saying things like... STAY AWAY from Shirin's Guest House in Langkawi.  It's a bed bug ridden dump run by a radical Iranian Muslim and an insane Japanese woman.  Hmm... I guess I should finish my entry on Langkawi before I post this or you'll have no idea what I'm talking about.

It's been a great year!  I've had an incredible time aimlessly wandering around Taiwan, Korea, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia (Peninsula and Borneo) and once again find myself stuck in Thailand.  Just another shitty day here in paradise.  I've changed my "plans" almost as many times as there have been days in this year.  I would have thought that I would have made my way through most of Australia and New Zealand by now and shortly be moving on towards South America via French Polynesia and Easter Island by now.  But the best thing about not having a real plan is that it really doesn't matter where I am as long as I'm ...Having A Good Time.  With the internet and this blog, I don't have to be missing.  I purposely didn't buy a Round The World ticket because they are only valid for 1 year and I shudder to think if I would have had to return home today when my ticket expired.  I met a guy a few weeks ago that left on the same day I did and is on his way home today on his RTW ticket.  I've seen more temples and Wats than I can shake a stick at. Each alone would be a breath taking sight, but all together in a relatively short period of time tends to blur them into a fuzzy temple collage in my mind.  One stand out would have to be the temples around Ankor Wat in Cambodia, an absolute highlight of this trip.  I have Bob and Denise to thank for bringing me over to this side of the world again instead of South America.  Their wedding in Bali had to be one of the most beautiful venues and weddings I'd ever been to with an amazing cliff side sunset ceremony and the full moon rising directly behind.  But at least 50% of any trip is defined not by the sites you visit so much as by all the wonderful people with warm smiles and good hearts who truly make a journey worthwhile.  I wish I could thank them all personally, but many of the things that have helped me the most have been done by anonymous strangers or ships that have passed unable to remember thechineseguyumet at gmail dot com.  For those of you reading this that have shared in the great times of the past year, Thank You for helping to color my trip's canvas and I hope to see you again somewhere else in the world.  And for all the bastards that have tried to ruin my trip by trying to steal my bag or by picking fights because of differing political and religious beliefs, I'm sure your heathen gods will smite you down and punish you for all eternity for your deplorable behavior (if that's what you believe LOL).

I don't know what this next year will bring, but even if it's half as good as the last one, I look forward to the adventures that lie ahead.  Wish me luck and good travels.

Re: Happy Anniversary
I was away for 3 weeks on islands in the Andaman Sea and I don't bother much with the internet when I'm on remote islands mostly because if there is a computer on that island it's a supply demand pricing schedule that I'm not willing to pay. Langkawi has now been posted prior to this posting. Lipe and Jum are in composition. I hope to finish them before I disappear to some islands on the other side of Thailand in the Gulf of Siam.

Hello Jim, Congratulations with your birthday. I'm not John Lennon but I'm a jealous guy too. I always enjoy your funny stories. When you're on your way too Belgium (maybe next year or in a few years), let me know, you're welcome! The girls are very beautiful here. When you're still not convinced, the food is delicious and the beer is awesome. The best pubs in Europe are in Belgium. I wish you good luck and good travels Peter
