Lijiang is a town I had been looking forward to visiting whilst in China so I was quite happy to spend a few days there, basically to recover from the gorge trek. Lijiang is separated into a new and old town, and it is the old town everyone comes to see. So we spent a good few hours wandering around doing nothing really.

The old town was nice enough but I had expected more. I mean it has cobbled streets and is supposed to look old but it is all new. I was really disappointed by it. It was all just fake and for show to make as much money from the Chinese tourists as possible. Nothing but a big tourist trap. In one street I managed to count 5 Kodak shops!

Bored with the old town we strolled out to find an Internet cafe for a few hours. Turned out to be the best net access since Hiroshma and we stayed for hours. In the evening we ate some dinner before heading to a coffee shop to play some cards. It was also a way to escape the hordes of Chinese tourist groups who visit the old town by night.

I'm not talking about a couple of people but thousands all in matching baseball caps blindly following their guides flag from shop to shop. Not my kind of thing but at least they cause no harm.

It's worth pointing out that it was Halloween today and we saw a bunch of Americans dressed up and getting loads of attention from the Chinese tour groups. One of them came up and said "don't worry, I'm American!" Well she was late 20's and still dressing up for some stupid holiday so I will worry thank you!
