Hit the road this morning at about 8:30am. First stop of the day was Parkes to see "The Dish". This is the second largest radio telescope in Australia and it did not fail to disappoint. I had been wanting to see this for quite some time and was glad to be able to check it off my list of things to see. Very impressive.
The countryside that we drove through today was really beautiful. The whole way was field after field of young green wheat and golden yellow canola blanketing the landscape. I could certainly see why they call this region the bread basket of the country. Not to mention why Australia's colours at sporting events are geen and gold.
We made it Tamworth in time to get a hotel and find some dinner. It was nothing like I expected it to be and I was pretty disappointed. Being the home of country music, I guess I pictured a town that looked like it was out of the wild west with saloons that had country music star wannabe’s that were trying to make it to the big time. What I got was a largish country town like any other with a hardware store, supermarket, a couple of dodgy looking motels and car yards etc. There didn’t look like any saloons could be found for dinner, where I could get my country music on, so we ended up just eating at the hotel restaurant, which for a Best Western, was an EXTREMELY expensive meal. This place cost as much as some of the fancier restaurants in Melbourne. Outrageous! We were also lucky we weren’t one day later, as apparently there wasn’t a single room in town for Tuesday night due to a sold out Powderfinger concert.
