Lyn and I were up fairly early. We took showers/got dressed and stashed our bags in the kitchen. We headed off to see how much of Rome we could squeeze into one day. This is the 5th time in 5 years we have been to Rome. So this time was just to see things we missed and revisit some of our favorites. 1) St. Peters to climb the cupola. We went to the station and hopped on the subway. It was very busy and a bit crazy but the same as any large city during rush hour. We arrived at the Vatican early and there wasn't even a line. There was an option to buy a ticket for the elevator that takes you half way up, but I persuaded Lyn to take the stairs. After climbing a few hundred stairs we arrived outside at the top of the church, but below the cupola. Into another doorway and we were now climbing between the double walls of the cupola. The walls became a bit crooked as we reached the top and we were soon looking out on the entire city of Roma. There was a great view and as we made our way around the top we could see the line forming to visit the Vatican and the cupola. Many people started showing up each one wheezing harder than the last. It became too crowded and we headed for the stairs. We walked out and hopped back on the train and headed to the Coliseum, Arc of Constantine and the Roman Forum. We want to see the huge hand and foot that are broken off of a statue (you have probably seen the postcard of the cat sitting on the toes of the huge foot), but we were told that they have been moved to the museum. Off again, to the Trevi Fountain and the Villa di Medici at the Spanish steps.
