Polonnaruwa, the second most ancient capital of Sri Lanka, dates back to King Vijayabahu I who reunited the country in 1070AD and shifted the capital. However, it is his grandson Parakramabahu I, who had extensive irrigation built (which to this day still serve), who is more renown. Polonnaruwa stood as the capital until 1284, when it shifted to Dambadeniya.
