Pinnawala elephant orphanage was formed to protect & nurture orphaned elephants. The orphanage began in 1975 on a coconut plantation and after various moves, finally settled in its present 25 acre location 16 years ago. There are around 60 elephants there now, with numbers being further swelled by elephants there now being old enough to breed.
There are two bathing & feeding sessions, at 10am & 2pm, where the elephants are led down to the nearby river to bathe & then back for food.
