12 miles south-west of Sigiriya lie the cave temples of Dambulla. The caves date back to the 1st century BC, when King Valagam Bahu took shelter there from the invading army which had driven him out of Anuradhapura. Inside the 5 caves are 48 statues of Buddha, various Hindu statues (dating back to the 12th century) and beautifully decorated walls and ceilings. Another uphill climb is required, this time only 150m though.
Incidentally, I have read that photographs are no longer allowed inside the cave after a particularly insensitive individual posed sitting on Buddha's lap. While I hope this is not the case for both the insult it would cause and for visitors, unfortunately, I can well believe it.
