Flag of Nicaragua  , Corn Islands,
Sunday, July 18, 2010

Our time on Little Corn is drawing to a close….it's been a lovely week…I mean, how could it not be? It’s a very Robinson Crusoe-esque setting….so different from the rest of Nicaragua.

A composite day looks like this…. start the morning w Nicaraguan coffee and French toast made w coco bread and a bowl of fresh, truly fresh fruit, walk up the beach looking for the perfect place to drop in w/ my snorkel gear… meet some on-the-beach, shack-living locals machete-ing their way through some home development project,  find some explosive, grape-like sea plant that’s engaging enough to burst over and over again, have a lunch of ceviche and fish tacos.....

.....chat with an assortment of characters….a young guy from Norway,  the ever-perfect Swiss family,  the diver from South Africa, the young Canadian who stopped here for a short visit 6 months ago, some women doing water quality research, and of course, the ex-pats… get too hot…too sticky…get drenched in the sudden and driving rains that come out of nowhere, slip in the mud on the path and come up with it pasted and splattered down the front of me, watch the eagle rays flipping out of the water in the evening by the end of the dock frightened by the armada of barracudas visible in the light on the dock,  eat some of Brigit’s lobster slathered in garlic paste, am offered all sorts of tourist assistance by a local, including some White Lobster (did I mention that this was a stopover for the drug-running boats from Columbia?), …watch the stars, interminably slap at mosquitos, surprise…no flashlight / get lost on the path back to my shack…maybe Ill be spending the night in the rainforest if I can’t find my way back – sure hope not…weave my way back to the main house and light…ok there’s my shack…write to you all….sleep to the sound of waves crashing…wake up to a torrential downpour on the tin roof…and then, it’s morning again….to do all over in some random fashion.

I get to a place I like and I can’t imagine leaving…each time I feel a tear from between staying forever and moving on.   But then, I’m also curious to see what the next place holds.  So it’ll be off to Grenada tomorrow…the wild panga ride, everything in reverse…towards the southern part of Nicaragua…and some internet so I can send all this off…maybe even do some laundry…time to get off the hammock and start the day….
